Offender Tablet

Inmate phone dialer
Secure messaging
Video visitation
Commissary ordering
Trust account
Education + Law library
Family voice calls
Grievance forms

The Offender Tablet is the inmate-facing surface — a single kiosk/tablet experience that exposes the safe-by-default inmate apps: phone dialer, secure messaging, video visitation, commissary ordering, trust account, education and law-library resources, grievance forms. Everything available to the inmate is on one screen; everything generates an audit trail.

What it does

  • Replaces the wall phone, the kiosk for commissary, and the paper grievance form with a single signed-in tablet session.
  • Routes paid services (calls, video, messaging) through the Fortress IPS billing layer with the inmate’s trust balance, respecting per-facility minute caps and call lists.
  • Provides a controlled education and law-library surface — what’s available, what’s not — without unsupervised web browsing.
  • Captures grievances as structured records routed straight into the operations queue, with full audit trail.

How it works

The Offender Tablet uses a kiosk session service to bind the device to an authenticated inmate identity. From there the same Fortress services that power the staff surfaces (IPS Digital Services, Visitation, Commissary Ordering, Trust Accounting) provide the data; the inmate UI is the client. WebRTC audio & video link through facility TURN credentials.

Data captured

  • Per-inmate session: sign-in, app used, duration, billed amount
  • Calls, messages, video sessions with their billing rows
  • Commissary orders linked to trust transactions
  • Grievances as queued operations records

Compliance & retention

Recorded calls and visits inherit the existing recording-retention rules; grievance records follow the facility’s records schedule. Any inmate-tablet activity that contributes to a Threat Assessment is linked to the ThreatAssessmentCase row and retained for the case retention window.

We rolled out tablets last year and the biggest win nobody talks about is the drop in grievance paperwork — inmates filing through the tablet means staff isn’t hand-delivering forms and logging everything manually. Curious whether your system flags duplicate grievances automatically, because that was a headache we had to solve on the backend ourselves.

We rolled out tablets in our facility about eight months ago and the reduction in in-person grievance paperwork alone made it worth it. My biggest question going in was how well the trust account integration actually worked in practice — glad to see vendors are finally putting all of this on one surface instead of making inmates bounce between kiosks. Anyone else finding that the education module actually gets used, or is that mostly a selling point on paper?

We rolled out tablets at our facility about eight months ago and the reduction in face-to-face grievance requests alone made it worth it — staff aren’t chasing down paper forms anymore. One thing I’d like to see addressed though: how does your system handle inmates who refuse to use the tablet and still demand in-person processing for everything? That’s been our biggest friction point.

We rolled out a similar setup about eight months ago and the reduction in kite volume alone was worth the transition — staff aren’t buried in paper grievances anymore. One thing I’d caution is making sure your policy on messaging approvals is locked down tight before you go live, because inmates will test every gap immediately. Has anyone dealt with managing tablet privileges as a disciplinary tool within the JMS workflow specifically?

We rolled out tablets at our facility about eight months ago and the reduction in in-person commissary disputes alone made it worth it. My one question is how your system handles tablets during lockdown — do you have the ability to restrict specific features remotely without pulling the devices?

We rolled out tablets about eight months ago and the reduction in in-person grievance paperwork alone made it worth it. My one question is how well the trust account integration holds up when you’re reconciling at month-end — that’s where our old system always fell apart. Curious if others have run into the same issue.
